S. Walter Martin collection, 1956-1984.

The S. Walter Martin collection consists of correspondence, reports, speeches, press releases, clippings, photographs, printed material, and items related to his inauguration as president of Emory University. The earliest items are reports and letters which date from the period of the search for a university president to succeed Goodrich Cook White (1956-1957). The greatest bulk of material is from the time of Martin's presidency (1957-1962), while a few clippings (1964-1984) and printed items (1966) date from later years.

Sidney Walter Martin was born in Tifton, Georgia on February 1, 1911. Martin was educated at Furman University (A. B., 1932), the University of Georgia (M. A., 1935), and the University of North Carolina (Ph. D. in History, 1942). Following two years of employment at Furman University (1930-1932) and three years as a high school teacher in Palatka, Florida (1932-1935), Martin joined the faculty of the University of Georgia in 1935.
